This is one of the consequences of the crisis New Caledonia is experiencing. Some parents choose not to send their children to school in the city anymore. Young people sometimes go to the islands and have to discover a completely new environment.
Leaving your school, or even your community, to discover a whole new routine can sometimes be a difficult step to take.
In Lifu, some schools have welcomed new students from Grand Terre as classes resumed, including Havilah College, which had eight students enrolled at the start of the school year.
Among them, young Gope, 11, is from Kutio College in Doumbea. His mother wanted to send him to Lifu to go to school, away from the tensions on the mainland. It was his grandmother who welcomed him to Drehu. Despite this family background, it was not easy for the young boy to join the new class after what he had been through. “I was at Kutio Secondary School and because of the bombings, I came with my grandmother and my mom said maybe I would stay for the whole year.” When we asked him how he felt about the situation, he responded in a whisper. “I was a little ashamed and sad because my alma mater is right there.”
The teachers were very attentive, went out of their way to welcome him, and left room for conversation. “I volunteer to welcome this new student in Class 6Egypt”, explained his new head teacher. It was important for me to welcome these students who had experienced difficulties on the mainland.
This teacher is well aware that there may be concerns. “I wanted him to be welcomed in the best conditions and we used the Expression Workshop to discover ourselves, which allowed me to chat with him.”
If we are to believe the press release issued by the Province of the Islands this Friday (June 21), the Loyalty School confirms this trend. “New registrations, especially from the Southern Province, are conducted by each department head. The condition for registration is to register before the end of the year and present a “Certificate of Cancellation of Temporary Registration Application from the School of Origin”. It is not accepted.”
