New Zealand has reported 3657 new cases of Covid-19 in the week to Sunday, with 40 more people dying from the virus.

The death toll is almost double what Te Whatu Ora/Health NZ reported last week.

Of the new cases, 2,158 were reinfections.

There were 208 hospitalized cases, none of whom were admitted to the intensive care unit.

Last week, The Ministry of Health reported 8,943 new cases and 25 new deaths.

After the latest data was released Dedicated Covid-19 health hotline and doctor services have ended.

Both centres were set up by the Ministry of Health as part of New Zealand’s response to COVID-19 and are operated by the Whakarongorau Aotearoa New Zealand Telehealth Service.

Funding for these services was secured on June 30.

Martin Hefford from the New Zealand Ministry of Health said the public health system was changing the way it responded to the COVID-19 pandemic.

He said management of Covid-19 would continue “as usual” with treatments similar to those used for other infectious diseases such as SARS.

Healthline nurses and paramedics will continue to provide advice and information.
