COVID-19: 2,772 new cases, 31 new deaths

New Zealand has reported 2772 new cases of Covid-19 in the week to Sunday, with 31 more people dying from the virus.

This is New Zealand’s Ministry of Health reported 3,657 confirmed cases and 40 deaths last week..

Of the new cases, 1,686 were reinfections.

There are 173 hospitalized cases.

Te Whatu Ora also noted on its website that there were issues with the number of Covid cases and related hospital admissions reported between May 27 and June 23, which resulted in an undercount of cases published on June 24.

“The underlying issue has been identified and resolved. The number of items impacted has been updated and will be higher than previously reported.”

“Like other organisations, we will manage Covid-19 in the same way we manage other infectious diseases.”

Andrew Skelly, the union’s head of health, said: “At a time when Covid cases are surging, this is simply irresponsible – removing sick leave will lead to more Covid transmission in hospitals among sick and vulnerable people.”

He said the country had just emerged from its sixth wave of the pandemic in 30 months, with 55 people hospitalized a day at its peak.
