Council has “no objection” to charity sale at The Diamond

Donegal County Council is standing firm on a new parking ban at the Diamond in Donegal town in response to tomorrow’s protest.

The protest was organised by charity fundraiser Billy Bustard to overturn a new parking ban on the renovated Diamond public space. Mr Bustard was fined last Saturday Because he parked his van in a pedestrian zone as he promoted the latest fundraising campaign for the Donegal-Galway Cancer Bus.

The city council issued a statement today to clarify that they are not opposed to charity sales and once again called on the public to continue to comply with the new pedestrian street regulations.

A spokesman said: “In recent days there have been comments in various media outlets suggesting that the council is preventing the use of the Donegal Town Diamond for events such as charity sales.”

“The council wishes to clarify that it has no objection to such activities taking place here.

“The council wishes to reiterate its concern that the Diamonds plot is regularly used as a car park for any vehicle, including for other events taking place there, including charity events. We again ask that, given all the reasons the council has provided, everyone respects this request to ensure that the area is enjoyable and accessible to all.”

Donegal County Council asks for the co-operation of all those using Diamond to ensure that the space is reserved for pedestrians and closed to vehicular traffic, thereby ensuring the following:

The Diamond is a safe and welcoming place to host community events year-round.
Avoid cracks in the road surface caused by vehicles parked on diamonds.
Avoid the possibility of pedestrians tripping over cracked pavement.
Avoid spending public money on trip and fall claims which could easily be avoided if the pavement was not damaged.
Eliminate health and safety issues arising from the interaction between vehicles and pedestrians in designated public areas, e.g.
- Vehicles travelling within designated pedestrian zones.
- Children may be exposed to hot exhaust.
- Children may climb on the bike and the bike may tip over.
Pedestrians, especially those with limited mobility, are encouraged to circulate freely.
To ensure everyone can enjoy the Diamond and avoid other users feeling uncomfortable or scared when seeing a motorcycle on the Diamond.
Avoid vehicle oil stains from contaminating newly paved roads.
Avoid leaving tire marks on newly paved roads.
Avoid damaging the curb by vehicles hitting it.
Prevent street furniture from being hit and damaged by vehicles.
Ensure access to public areas is not obstructed by vehicles.
