Argentina advanced to the Copa America on Thursday after a 1-1 penalty shootout victory over Ecuador.

After a strong performance in the group stage, the Copa America defending champions came under great pressure against Ecuador but ultimately qualified for the semi-finals, where they will face the winner between Canada and Venezuela.

Following Argentina’s victory, we take a look at the latest match schedule, match recaps and upcoming fixtures:

Argentina 1, Ecuador 1 (Argentina won 4-2 on penalties)

Both teams defended for much of the first half, but Argentina found the net in the 34th minute to take a 1-0 lead before halftime. Lisandro Martínez took a great corner kick and found himself with a chance to shoot, which he headed home.

Argentina’s Enzo Fernández had a clear chance to shoot in the first half but chose to cross, which ultimately missed the target.

Shortly after the second half began, Ecuador had a great chance to score when Argentina committed a handball in the penalty area and Ecuador was awarded a penalty. Ecuador sent veteran Enna Valencia to take the penalty, but the ball hit the post and went wide.

In this game, Lionel Messi, who set the record for the longest playing time in the history of the America’s Cup, had a chance to score, but Ecuador successfully blocked his shot and maintained the score at 1-0.

Ecuador looked set to be eliminated, but a miraculous goal in extra time kept their hopes alive. John Yeboah’s perfect pass found Kevin Rodriguez, who headed the ball past the goalkeeper.

Ecuador had a great chance to win in overtime, but the shot went wide of the target.

In a wonderful penalty shootout, Argentina scored four shots and Ecuador only scored two shots. In the end, Argentina successfully advanced to the semi-finals.
