Earlier this week, Cook Islands Education Minister Vaine “Mac” Mokoroa and her ministerial team held an introductory meeting with the University of Auckland at its Auckland City campus.
The university delegation included Vice-Chancellor (Research) Professor Frank Bloomfield and Vice-Chancellor (Pacific) Professor Jemaima Tiatia-Siau.
Professor Bloomfield said in a statement that the discussions were productive and he hoped to explore future opportunities for collaboration with the Cook Islands in research and capacity development.
Professor Jemaima Tiatia-Siau said the University was honoured to host Minister Mokoroa and she welcomed the opportunity to strengthen relations between Pacific nations given the University’s commitment to supporting Pacific-led research.
“Strengthening relationships and developing future collaboration in the Pacific can only lead to more opportunities and better outcomes for our Pacific people. We are honoured to host Minister Mokoroa and thank him for visiting our university,” Professor Tiatia-Theo said.
Professor Bloomfield said the University had a wealth of expertise and was keen to explore future opportunities for research and capacity development collaboration.
The statement added: “The discussions are in line with the University’s vision and Taumata Teitei strategic plan around research and innovation. Investing in equity objectives will drive growth in the Pacific research workforce. And a commitment to partnership and deep engagement with Pacific peoples in New Zealand and across the Pacific.”
The talks took place while the WHO Regional Director for the Western Pacific, Dr Saia Ma’u Piukala, was hosted at the Pacific Islands College to share his views with visiting dignitaries and academic researchers from the university.
Professor Tiatia-Siau said both visits were significant for the University and Pacific people, demonstrating Pacific strengths expertise and a willingness to collaborate to enhance and improve outcomes in the Pacific.
