Construction on Target’s new Jersey City store is progressing smoothly

One of the nation’s largest retailers is working to bring a new store to a Target store in a prominent shopping plaza on Jersey City’s West Side, with the store scheduled to open in the coming weeks.

Jersey Revelations News about the Jersey City Planning Commission approving a new Target in May 2023. The land where the mega-store is planned to be built is 381 Route 440, covering approximately 424,000 square feet, 100 meters from the huge Gulf Front Redevelopment along the Hackensack River.

Since then, much of that time has been spent demolishing a former K-Mart on the site, which is now complete. Construction crews are currently laying the foundation for the site, which when completed will reconnect with the rest of the larger Stadium Plaza complex.

Target’s plan, drafted by Bignell Watkins Hather, calls for a new, one-story building to house its 119,387-square-foot store, as well as 515 proposed parking spaces and new signage. Plans for the property also include 34 bicycle parking spaces.

Target has a store in Jersey City in Newport, at 100 14th Street on the waterfront, but has yet to make inroads into the inland market. But that’s about to change in a big way; the company Announce In 2022, they will become the anchor tenant on the ground floor of Kushner’s One Journal Square project.

The race to see which of Jersey City’s planned stores will open first is officially on as the future Target begins to rise on Route 440. The company has not yet announced an estimated timeline for the two stores.
