NEW YORK (AP) — New York City’s famous Coney Island roller coaster is closed indefinitely after it became paralyzed days ago.
A 97-year-old wooden structure at Luna Park, known as the “Whirlwind,” was climbing Thursday when operators shut it down because of a cabin malfunction. Passengers were safely evacuated, the New York City Department of Buildings reported.
A video posted on social media showed a person being carefully escorted onto the tracks. Inspectors went to the scene Friday and issued a violation notice to the owner of Luna Park for damaged equipment and for not immediately reporting the incident to the department.
A message on the Luna Park website on Sunday said the cyclone will reopen when repairs are complete and the machine passes inspection.
“At Luna Park at Coney Island, safety is our top priority, as is machine maintenance, and we conduct extensive testing each day before Luna Park opens and throughout the day as needed,” the statement said. “The Coney Island Cyclone Coaster is 97 years old and is meticulously maintained and tested every day.”
