06-10-24.-The National Telecommunications Commission (Conatel) closed this Saturday (June 8) the radio station La Vernácula 88.3 FM, which broadcast in Zaraça, Guarico.

The state entity argued that the measure was consistent with the fact that the National Press Union published it through its X account, and that the station did not put the documents in order and did not comply with the transmissions from official channels.

In addition to ending the broadcast, Conatel seized several of the station’s equipment, including an eight-channel console, a 2,000-watt transmitter, a computer with a 1-terabyte disk and an audio processor.

The Public Space Citizens Association (Espacio Público Civil Association), which is responsible for registering violations of freedom of expression, reported on May 15 that as of that date, they had recorded the closure of at least 14 radio stations in the country so far in 2024.

With the cessation of transmissions by La Vernácula 88.3 FM, the number of radio stations closed in Venezuela in the first half of this year has risen to 15.

At least 310 stations have been closed since 2003, according to the NGO Espacio Público, which says this “is evidence of the Venezuelan State’s policy of persecution and censorship, which violates fundamental rights such as freedom of expression and access to information enshrined in the Venezuelan Constitution and international agreements”.
