Stanbic Bank’s parent company, Stanbic Uganda Holdings Limited (SUHL), has donated equipment worth UGX20 million to Mbale Referral Hospital and Maluku Health Centre III as part of its corporate social investment to improve maternal health services across the country.
The donation was made as part of the community activities undertaken by a Standard Bank Uganda delegation, led by Francis Karuhanga, the Standard Bank Uganda Chief Executive Officer, which is on a week-long tour of the bank’s regional operations in Eastern Uganda.
“Health is our nation’s wealth and supporting the government’s efforts in this area through our ongoing partnership with the Ministry of Health is an important aspect of our corporate social investment strategy, alongside other priorities including education and environmental protection.
The equipment worth UGX 20 million that we donated to Mbale Referral Hospital and Maluku Health Centre 3 will support these institutions in strengthening services for pregnant women and enabling safe deliveries as part of our efforts to reduce maternal and neonatal mortality,” said Francis Kaluhanga.

The equipment includes six cots, a pulse oximeter, a 100-mother kit, two hospital beds and a delivery kit, which are essential for a safe delivery during childbirth.
According to the Ministry of Health, the government’s efforts to reduce maternal mortality, with the support of partners, have begun to bear fruit, with the latest statistics showing a reduction from 339 to 189 per 100,000 live births.
Dr. Abeso Julian, head of the Paediatrics Department at Mbale Referral Hospital, said that Mbale Referral Hospital delivers 300 to 400 children every month, in addition to treating 1,000 to 1,300 children every month in the inpatient and outpatient departments.
“We are extremely grateful to Standard Bank for their generosity and commitment to improving maternal health care in our community. Their donation of equipment will greatly enhance our ability to provide safe and effective care to pregnant women and their newborns,” she said.
Mbale Industrial Area MP Karim Masaba called on the private sector to emulate Standard Bank’s generosity and support the communities where its businesses are located.
“As a long-time customer, I am proud of this move by Standard Bank. There are many companies doing business in town but not everyone has the heart to give back to the community. Thank you for your love for the people of Mbale,” Masaba said.
Mbale Referral Hospital serves more than 5 million people in 17 districts of the region. These districts include Mbale, Budaka, Bududa, Bukedia, Bukwo, Bramburi, Butaleja, Kapchowa, Kumi, Manafwa, Silungko and others.
