I’m a millennial, and the reason I’ve been in this never-ending grind is because in the 90s, we saw the light at the end of the tunnel. I run away from that stupid hope that there would be something at the end of all this suffering, because I saw it. The next generation didn’t see that. They didn’t see that our parents made $3,000 a month, and everyone had some spare cash to go to Miami two or three times a year, raise our kids, and go to our football games. Now, it’s $2,000 just for rent, anything nice that you don’t want to share with others, and you have to deal with a landlord who treats you with disrespect every time.
The government continues to spend the hundreds of thousands of dollars we earn from creating our economy on reports and consultants, but they don’t even respect us enough to publish the report and tell us why they don’t like it.
I’m tired of being disrespected everywhere. Every government official and every business telling me I have to do their bidding. I need to start saving my money and stop spending it. I need businesses and the government to start respecting the fact that my money doesn’t belong to them. They can’t just pick my wallet for no reason.
The government and the older generation ask us, beg us, to save face and keep the economy going for the sake of the sacred “GDP” because it’s just a string of numbers on a screen to deceive them and the world. I make a decent income. I wanted to make this much when I was young, but I barely save any at the end of the month. Virtually all the money I spend is bills, but I’m forced to do it and I’ll shame the business owners for it.
The age of convenience is fleeting. With rents going up, bills skyrocketing and food prices rising, I have to forgo everything that is not absolutely necessary. I can’t wait to see a round of “come support local restaurants” ads begging us to keep them afloat. I’ve seen plenty of summer promotions and events. Nowhere in Cayman will offer a “deal” beyond an absolute necessity. Money comes first and we learn that from our government every day.
