On Friday, June 7, 2024, we sadly commemorate the tragic SLM disaster of June 7, 1989.
On this fateful day, a plane from Surinam Airways (SLM) crashed near Zandele while landing at Johan Adolf Pengel International Airport in thick fog.
All nine crew members and 167 of the 178 passengers died in the disaster. Eleven passengers and a dog named “Lucky” by the police survived the disaster. The incident is being called the biggest airplane disaster in Suriname’s history.
A large number of the victims were “Kleurrijk Elftal”, a group of professional football players of Surinamese descent who were on their way to Suriname to participate in a tournament. Their loss was a major blow to the football community and the country as a whole.
Today, 35 years after the disaster, we remember the victims and express our condolences to their families and all those affected by this tragedy.
Commemorations provide a moment of reflection and collective mourning, while we preserve the memory of the lives lost.
The SLM disaster remains a memory ingrained in Suriname’s history. It reminds us of the fragility of life and the resilience of the survivors.
Let us use this day to reflect on the value of every day and the power of our community coming together in times of sorrow.
