Dutch citizens are evacuated from unsafe areas. Commandos and Rangers from the 11th Air Mobility Brigade are practicing this realistic scenario this week.

Sometimes the security situation in a country deteriorates to the point where Dutch citizens cannot escape. In this case, the cabinet may decide to have soldiers evacuate them. This has happened several times in recent years. Think of Sudan in 2023 and Afghanistan two years ago. Now, soldiers are on standby to evacuate Dutch citizens from the Middle East if the conflict between Israel and Hamas gets further out of control.

Training required

Fast and effective action in a crisis requires coordinated cooperation between different units and international partners. Therefore, it is necessary to train for such scenarios regularly.

The commandos do this every year. This time it is the first time they have teamed up with the recently formed 11th Airmobile Troop Cavalry Battalion.

Process Evacuation

During the training, the troops went through the entire evacuation process: from alerting, planning to evacuating personnel. In technical terms, such an operation is called a noncombatant evacuation operation (NEO).
