Gastin under the nose of Estangate
Nicolas Gestin became the Olympic canoe slalom champion at the age of 24, under the watch of Tony Estanguet, president of the Paris 2024 organizing committee and a three-time gold medalist himself (2000, 2004, 2012).
Before winning the Olympic gold medal, he won the Under-23 World Championship twice, in 2019 and 2021. The Breton from Quimperle joined the senior World Tour and ended the 2022 season with a ranking of N 1, then won the silver medal at the World Championships the following year.
Silver Hoof and Arrow
France, led by Karim Lagouage, Nicolas Touzant and Stéphane Landois, took silver in the equestrian all-around. France was second in the cross-country event on Sunday but was unable to catch Britain in the showjumping event.
French archers (Baptiste Ardis, Thomas Chirraud and Jean-Charles Valadon) also finished second, defeating South Korea 5-1 in the archery team final.
Women’s Sabre Doubles
Fencing won its first gold medal thanks to Manon Apithy-Brunet’s victory over compatriot Sara Balzer in the sabre final. Apithy-Brunet is the first French fencer to win a gold medal in the women’s sabre since the weapon was introduced at the 2004 Olympics.
Pidcock Devas Koretzky
The day after Pauline Ferrand-Prévot was crowned, Victor Koretzky took silver in the cross-country mountain bike event, behind Briton Tom Pidcock, who retained the title after a crazy comeback and a stormy finish.
The two led individually in the final few hundred meters, with Pidcock making a daring pass in front before crossing the finish line to the boos of the French public.
Popovich joins Olympic elite
He famously performed a rare 100m-200m double at the 2022 World Championships, aged just 17. He did it again a few weeks later during the European Championships, setting a record in the 200m.
This time, Romanian David Popovici, only 19 years old, won his first Olympic title in the 200m freestyle, breaking his own record. He had to win in 1:44.72, just 200ths ahead of Briton Matthew Richards. American Luke Hobson took the podium.
Djokovic Nadal
Novak Djokovic’s 6-1, 6-4 victory over Rafael Nadal in the second round of the Olympics, their 60th career meeting, brought the Spaniard one step closer to the end of his career.
The Mallorcan, 38, cannot challenge the Serbian’s logic in his bid to win his first Olympic gold medal at the age of 37 after a two-year absence.
Handball players at their lowest point
The defending Olympic champion French handball team suffered another heavy defeat, this time against Norway (27-22), after being beaten in the opening match by Denmark (37-29).
The Blues now have to beat Egypt to advance to the quarter-finals, where they should find a quality player. Due to the lack of defense against Denmark, France had great difficulties in attack this time. Even the addition of Valentin Porter and Melvin Richardson and pure defender Carl Coenen makes it possible for the team to regain some automaticity.
No Triathlon Training in the Seine
Although the men’s and women’s triathlons are due to start on Tuesday, there has been no prior reconnaissance of the Seine. As on the previous day, rain this weekend forced the organisers to cancel the training swim scheduled for Monday morning because the “water quality level” did not provide “sufficient guarantees”. However, they still want to be confident that the event will go ahead when the sun and heat arrive in the capital. A decision will be made before dawn on Tuesday morning.
