Collective wastewater treatment was soon extended to Pires and Arue

On Thursday, July 25, 2024, the Commune of Teporionu’u (CCT) and the French Development Agency (AFD) signed in Pireè a loan agreement in the amount of 1.19 billion francs to expand the collective sanitation network to the municipalities of: Pireè and Aru.
The municipalities of Arue, Papeete and Pires created a municipal community on January 1, 2024, to jointly extend collective sanitation services from Papeete to the towns of Pires and Arue. Driven by a strong political impetus, this merger makes it possible to envision sharing, quality services, controlled costs and a strong environmental impact. In fact, the contamination of soils and lagoons is the most direct consequence of the lack of sanitation facilities.

The Urban Communities project, co-financed by AFD, the State and the State through development and transformation contracts and the French Biodiversity Office, corresponds to the first investment phase of the Sanitation Master Plan for the cities of Pires and Aroué, which took place in 2019.

The goal is to install wastewater collectors over 11 km along the coast of Pirae, Arue and Papeete. The collectors will be equipped with 9 discharge stations, connecting nearly 80 non-domestic users such as CHPF, COMSUP military buildings, Broche barracks, technical high school, etc. to the sewage treatment station in Papeete, Papeete. Through these connections, 1,500 cubic meters of sewage can be collected every day.

This work will begin in 2025. To this end, a public inquiry has been underway on this environmental study since July 22. You can consult this information at the town halls of Papeete, Pires and Arue until August 27, 2024.

The second phase of the project aims to connect more watersheds and communities as part of a future investment phase to address increased wastewater generation due to urban densification by 2040.
