In 12 years, the number of inhabitants in the department of Cochabamba has increased from 1,762,761 to 2,005,373, according to the official preliminary results of the 2024 census, published this Thursday by the National Statistics Institute (INE).
That means, according to the new report, Llajta has 242,612 more residents than in 2012, when Bolivia conducted its second-to-last census.
Most populous
Specifically, Cercado is the municipality with the most inhabitants, with 661,484 inhabitants, followed by Sacaba with 218,502 and Quillacollo with 165,830 citizens.
Previously, Cercado Mayor Manfred Reyes Vera expected that Cercado could exceed one million inhabitants, however, this did not happen. “The population growth is significant, we will exceed one million, which was expected,” the first municipality predicted.
By contrast, the towns with the smallest populations are Tacachi, in the municipality of Punata, with 1,276 inhabitants; Alalay, in Mizque, with 3,461; and Cuchumuela, also in Punata, with 3,818.
