Yesterday, Thursday, a 4.6 magnitude earthquake struck Cochabamba, with its epicenter in the Chapare department, but did not affect infrastructure in Sillar, just 45 km from the source of the earth movement.
The information was released in a statement by personnel from Sinohydro, the company building the double-track railway, and CONNAL, the company responsible for engineering quality control, after inspecting the construction on Thursday, including 30 kilometers of platforms, nine bridges, eight viaducts, four tunnels and more than 10 kilometers of containment structures.
“Last night, the earthquake in this area of El Sillar was very strong, so this morning we received instructions to carry out a thorough inspection of the entire area and we were able to verify that the structures are in optimal condition, without any damage or cracks, there are no cracks,” explained Nino Bejarano, an engineer with the Sinohydro Corporation.
Likewise, CONNAL engineer Saúl Arauco noted that the earthquake did not cause cracks or deformations “that would compromise the stability of the structure.” Apart from that, traffic on the road was not interrupted.
The El Cilal region is considered to be seismically active and geologically unstable, with 150,000 tons of cargo moving between the East and the West.
