Earlier this week, a group of daring climbers were scaling the volcano when they reached the edge and it suddenly erupted, forcing them to make a desperate escape.
Stunning footage captured by a government drone reportedly shows climbers fleeing down the flank of Mount Dukono in Indonesia as it begins to erupt, with the volcano spewing smoke and gas just as the climbers appear to have reached the summit.
Video footage showed climbers scrambling down the mountain as the volcano raged above them.
according to telegraphreported no injuries, and cited local media reports that the group had ignored warnings from Indonesian authorities not to climb Mount Dukono due to increased volcanic activity.
Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) said unauthorized climbers were spotted on the volcano when it erupted last Saturday.
“Dozens of unauthorized climbers scaled Mount Dukono in North Halmahera Regency, North Maluku province, when the volcano erupted last Saturday (August 17). The Dukono Volcano Observatory (PGA) said they were lucky to escape the ash showers from the eruption. Although the eruption has been observed, the Dukono volcano activity status remains at level two or ‘alert’,” they said.
The BNPB said the Dukono PGA is still observing the ongoing eruption and climbing is still not allowed at this time, urging everyone to adhere to advisories, especially within designated danger zones.
They said the volcano was still visibly emitting white and grey crater smoke, which remained high within 100 to 500 metres of the summit.
In its warning, the BNPB recalled that 21 climbers died last year while climbing Mount Merapi, an active volcano in West Sumatra province.
The volcanic activity was also classified as Category II at the time of the incident, as Mount Dukono is currently classified as Category II.
