The Cook Islands Rugby Union (CIRU) will bring the 2024 season to a close with an exciting prize giving ceremony this weekend.
The event celebrates the hard work, dedication and achievements of local rugby clubs and players.
The ceremony will take place at Aroa Nui Hall in Arorangi on Saturday, August 31 and it is sure to be a memorable night for all involved.
In his final report, CIRU Development Manager Ben Koteka expressed gratitude for the success of the season, highlighted the positive developments in local rugby and thanked all supporters and sponsors for taking the sport to greater heights.
Kotka hopes to continue to support improving the standard of Cook Islands Rugby Union and build on the momentum of this year’s success.
As anticipation builds, CIRU has released the nominations in various categories to honour outstanding performances during the 2024 rugby season.
The Best Back Line awards showcase some of the best talent in men’s and women’s rugby.
Nominees for the men’s category include Taio Taio (Arorangi Bears), Teriki Matenga (Titikaveka Bulldogs), Tamatoa Nicholas (Avatiu Eels) and Jason Potoru (Tupapa Panthers).
In the women’s division, Mahana Sijp of the Lady Panthers and Anillia Heather of the Lady Bears will battle it out for the title.
Competition for the best forward award was equally fierce. On the men’s side, Dabir Tonorio (Arorangi Bears), Peter Rajiragi (Titikaveka Bulldogs), Penidito Leo (Avatiu Eels) and Kana Nga (Tupapa Panthers) were all recognised for their efforts. On the women’s side, June Willie from the Lady Panthers and Feliza Nicholas from the Lady Bears were the ones to watch out for.
The Most Improved Player category is designed to recognize players who have made significant progress throughout the season.
Men’s nominees include Henry Mataio (Arorangi Bears), Rqaykon Marsters (Titikaveka Bulldogs), Anapa Nicholas (Avatiu Eels) and Pita Senibiukula (Tupapa Panthers).
On the women’s side, Erica Tumutoa (Panthers) and Zoey Twiggs (Bears) were nominated.
Finally, the Rookie of the Year award recognizes emerging talent.
For the men, nominees include Henry Mataio (Arorangi Bears), Tangimetua Akava (Titikaveka Bulldogs), Jeremiah Tutangata (Avatiu Eels) and Malakai Nikoro (Tupapa Panthers). For the women, nominees are Shae Te Whata (Ladies Panthers) and Aikitu Mose (Ladies Bears).
Awards will be given to youth in various categories.
