CIO rallies foreigners in Masvingo
By Political Reporter – State security operatives in Masvingo rounded up two foreigners last week and arrested them at their residence.
One of the foreigners complained about the lack of water and power in the town.
Lucas Slavik, a citizen of the Czech Republic, and Tom Ssekamwa, a citizen of Uganda, were charged with spreading false information and possessing pornographic material, respectively.
The two appeared before a packed court at the Masvingo Magistrates Court on Friday, attended by senior police officers and CIO personnel.
Despite their lawyer, Knowledge Mabvure of Chihanbwakwe Law Firm arguing that the law on false information was repealed years ago, Magistrate Mazingo remanded them in custody until Monday.
Makoni is standing for election to represent the state.
The Mirror understands that the Czech Republic’s embassy is doing everything it can to secure the release of its citizens.
Police seized laptops, cameras, sex toys, passports, cash and luggage from the men.
According to the state, Slavik was staying at the Back Packers Lodge in Masvingo when he was disturbed by the noise outside.
After investigating, he found that it was a group of mourners whose relatives had been hit by a car.
Slavik began recording videos in which he said Zimbabwe was short of water and electricity, and that prices were rising.
The police saw him, arrested him, and charged him with spreading false information based on the recording.
Ironically, the courtroom where Slavik appeared had no electricity, and his lawyer asked the judge: “Would it be a lie if he said there was no electricity in the courtroom?” – prompting laughter in the courtroom.
Mabwule also informed the judge that Masvingo had been without water for days and electricity for 12 hours.
After arresting Slavik, police went to the cabin and found a sex toy in Sekamwa’s bag, leading to his arrest.
