(CNS): Residents are urged to exercise extreme caution when hitting the roads this weekend as heavy rain is forecast to begin Friday night. The Cayman Islands National Weather Service says the chances of thunder and heavy rain are increasing over the weekend and Monday due to a trough of low pressure over the northwestern Caribbean Sea that is laden with moisture.

At least 1 to 1.5 inches of rain is expected each day over the next few days, and flood warnings have been issued for low-lying areas.

Forecasters say Friday night skies will be mostly cloudy with a 40 percent chance of showers and possible thunder, with temperatures dropping to the upper 70s. Winds will be south to southeast at 5 to 10 knots, with light to moderate seas of 2 to 4 feet.

Tomorrow, the sky will remain cloudy, and the chance of rain and thunder will increase to 60% in the afternoon, with localized heavy rainfall possible at times. Flooding is expected in low-lying areas. Temperatures will rise to the upper 80s. Winds will be from the south to the southeast at 10 to 15 knots with higher gusts. Seas will be light to moderate with wave heights of 2 to 4 feet.
