Tegucigalpa – Foreign Minister Eduardo Enrique Reyna announced that the Memorandum of Understanding with the United Nations Organization (UN) to negotiate the arrival of the CICIH in Honduras will be extended for the fourth time and will be valid until December 15 of this year.
Foreign Minister Reina said the measure was now official following a positive response to a June 7 letter from UN Under-Secretary-General Miroslav Jenča asking the Honduran authorities to preferably renew the existing memorandum of understanding.
On Saturday, June 15 (tomorrow), the two parties signed the third extension of the document that regulates the negotiations between the Honduran government and the United Nations on the creation of the International Commission against Corruption and Impunity in Honduras (CICIH), one of the star promises of the Honduran election campaign that brought the Liberal Party to power and with it the current President, Siomara Castro.
The Honduran foreign minister said on the “Frentión” program hosted by Renato Alvarez that it could be said that the memorandum has been extended and will take effect this weekend after it expired on Saturday.
He noted that the United Nations required a waiting period for the negotiations because the new head of the United Nations responsible for legal issues had just taken office and recorded the entire process. The person handling the case was designated as the head of the United Nations Mission in Iraq.
Foreign Minister Reina reiterated that the issue of the arrival of the CICIH has always been the initiative of the Xiomara Castro government and now depends on negotiations with the United Nations to realize this initiative. (PD).
