POLITICAL REPORTER – Supporters of the Zanu PF faction allied to President Emmerson Mnangagwa in Masvingo have launched an attack on Constantino Chiwenga to stop him from contesting the presidential succession race.
In a video circulating on social media, members of the Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front in Masvingo can be heard making it clear that Mnangagwa is not leaving.
This is despite Mnangagwa recently hinting that he will step down in 2028.
It is widely believed that Mnangagwa’s successor will be his deputy, Constantino Chiwenga.
In 2017, when Chiwenga helped Mnangagwa stage a military coup to overthrow the late President Robert Mugabe, the two reportedly reached a gentleman’s agreement that Chiwenga would take over as president in 2028.
Mnangagwa recently said through his spokesman George Charamba that he is currently serving his second and final term.
