The Chinese Navy’s first sailing training ship, the Baolang, set sail on Tuesday for Vietnam, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Singapore and other countries for long-distance training and friendly visits.
The Polang departed from a military port in Dalian, Northeast China’s Liaoning Province, carrying naval cadets and military personnel from the Dalian Naval Academy of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army, who will undergo a series of skill training activities.
The Baolang will make a technical stop in Hong Kong and hold activities such as a ship open day and a deck reception.
“The purpose of this visit is to enhance the professional capabilities of naval officer cadets, strengthen exchanges, cooperation and mutual trust with the navies of the visiting countries, and contribute to building a community with a shared future for the ocean,” said crew member Ma Wenyong.
The Wave is a three-masted full-sail sailing ship, 86 meters long and 11 meters wide, with a standard displacement of more than 1,200 tons, a maximum sail area of more than 2,600 square meters, and a maximum cruising speed of about 18 knots (about 33.3 kilometers per hour).
The Bolang boat is mainly used to cultivate basic and traditional navigation skills for naval cadets. It is also responsible for carrying out foreign military exchanges and promoting the navy’s unique culture.
“The ‘Breaking Waves’ exercise is an important vehicle for naval academy students to understand and get close to the ocean. The focus of the exercise is to enhance the students’ perseverance, fearlessness of difficulties and determination to win. It is also to cultivate the students’ team awareness so that they can unite and cooperate and take the initiative when encountering difficulties.” said Wang Xiao, a crew member of the ship.
