Data from China’s General Administration of Customs showed that Kyrgyzstan’s imports of Chinese cars in June 2024 unexpectedly increased by 74.1% from May 2024.
If Kyrgyzstan imported 1,900 buses from China in May, then in June it was 3,400 buses.
Car shipments from China have fallen every month since March. Some of the cars imported from China to Kyrgyzstan are then re-exported to Russia.
Car imports from China to Kyrgyzstan started to fall in the spring against the backdrop of new recycling fees that Russia began to levy on April 1, which, according to the wording, include “underpaid taxes and fees due to underestimation of the customs value of cars imported into Russia from the countries of the Eurasian Economic Union.”
As a result, in April, Kyrgyzstan’s imports of Chinese cars fell 80% from March, from 14,000 to 2,800.
In May, car imports from China fell to 1,900 units. In June, China’s car supply resumed growth, with 3,400 units imported.
Overall, in the first half of 2024, Kyrgyzstan imported 38,200 Chinese passenger cars, 5.5 times the number from January to June last year.
At the same time, at its peak in 2023, Kyrgyzstan will import 11,000 to 20,000 Chinese cars per month.
In July 2024, Alexey Podshchekokin, chairman of the Russian Automobile Dealers Association, reported on payment problems with China when importing cars.
