Chinese authorities are taking preventive measures to strengthen monitoring of people and goods entering China from countries or regions where measles, formerly known as monkeypox, has been confirmed in the past six months, the General Administration of Customs said.
As part of these measures, travelers from countries and regions with documented outbreaks will be required to declare in writing whether they have come into contact with symptomatic patients or if they themselves have symptoms, while vehicles, containers and cargo from countries and regions with outbreaks will be required to declare in writing. According to a press release from the agency, disinfection will be carried out.
Additionally, the World Health Organization’s European branch warned that more imported MPO cases are expected in Europe “in the coming days” after the new, more dangerous variant of the disease was discovered in Sweden.
“The confirmation of the MPOX 1 subtype in Sweden clearly reflects the interconnectedness of our world. It is likely that further cases of clade 1 will emerge in the European region in the coming days and weeks,” the World Health Organization said in a statement.
“The person became infected during his stay in an area in Africa where there is an outbreak of the Clade 1 subtype MPOX,” Olivia Wigtsel, interim head of Sweden’s Public Health Agency, explained at a press conference.
Wigsell assured that those infected in Sweden will receive care and advice in accordance with current regulations.
