BYD, the leading electric vehicle manufacturer in China01211) entered the Japanese market last year. In an interview with Kyodo News, BYD Auto Japan President Atsuki Tofukuji said that the company intends to expand its sales network to almost all prefectures within the year and is considering building a sales system with 90 stores across Japan.

90 stores to be built by the end of the year

BYD currently has sales outlets in 32 prefectures in Japan. Tofukuji pointed out that there are still 15 prefectures in the planning stage, and by the end of the year, basically all prefectures will have a store selling BYD cars.

The company has currently launched three models in the Japanese market, including an SUV and a sedan. Tofukuji said that they are studying the next model to be launched and will discuss the price range products with the greatest demand in Japan. Regarding the prospects of plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHVs), he believes that it is not the pure electric vehicle growth that is stagnant, but the PHV growth that is rapid, and the timing of the launch is still under discussion.

BYD, which entered the Japanese market last year, sold 1,084 vehicles there in the first half of this year, up 88% year-on-year, and its sales ranking among imported car brands rose to 14th place.
