Peruvian Foreign Minister Javier Gonzalez-Olaechea said Chinese automaker BYD01211) is considering the possibility of building an automobile assembly plant in Peru, saying the Chinese-funded Chancay Port project in Peru makes the plan feasible.
Peruvian President Boluarte visited China last month and met with BYD Chairman Wang Chuanfu in Shenzhen. He said that if BYD sets up an automobile assembly plant in Peru, it will benefit from the Chancay Port, which is scheduled to open in November. Peru will also build an industrial zone in Chancay Port or Arequipa, a large southern city 1,000 kilometers from the Pacific coastline. The Peruvian government will not set tariffs to encourage more local investment.
