Madrid (Euronews) – China’s Ministry of Commerce announced this Saturday a cooperation agreement with the European Union to avoid the tariffs announced by Brussels on Chinese electric vehicles.
Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao and EU Trade Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis held a telematics meeting, following which they announced a review of Chinese subsidies that have resulted in tariffs of up to 38.1%.
The two sides agreed to start consultations on the EU’s anti-subsidy investigation on electric vehicles originating in China. “The Chinese Ministry of Commerce posted a message on its X social network account.
If the two sides fail to reach an agreement, these rates will apply starting in July. There is even speculation that the agreement will be retroactively repealed if it takes effect after implementation.
Also on Saturday, German Economy Minister Robert Habeck stressed in China that the tariffs should not be seen as punitive measures.
“It is important to understand that they are not punitive tariffs (…). The goal is to achieve common standards for market access,” he said.
China announced additional tariffs on pork imports from the European Union, which particularly affected Spanish exports.
