Reykjavik’s schools and leisure department has sent a letter to parents encouraging them to talk to their children about the dangers of carrying knives.
The letter came after a stabbing in Menningarnótt, where a 16-year-old boy stabbed three of his peers.
The letter noted that there has been a recent surge in children carrying knives in schools and at leisure activities.
Set clear boundaries and monitor friends
Helgi Grimsson, director of Reykjavik’s school and leisure department, stressed the importance of prevention and encouraged parents to take an active part in their children’s lives, set clear boundaries and monitor their friends.
“There is great preventive value in children’s participation in organised leisure activities and respect for statutory outdoor time. It is important that parents are active participants in childcare, taking part in parent-teacher conferences, parent walks and class work,” the letter said.
The letter was sent to parents of children in Reykjavik.
