An 11-year-old boy who was injured in a shooting in Matina Limon on Saturday, in which his mother and another man were killed, died on Monday evening at the National Children’s Hospital in the capital.

The news was confirmed by her grandmother, Johanna Berrocal, who was traveling from San José to Limón with the body of her daughter, Yocelyn Leticia Chacón Berrocal, when the doctor called her to tell her that her grandson had also died.

“I’m not well, I’ve lost two people who were very important to me,” Mrs. Johanna said in the brief phone call.

This Monday morning, Dr. Carlos Jiménez Herrera, director of the Children’s Hospital, confirmed that the child was in “critical condition” after being treated at the Limontoni Facio Hospital and two other hospitals at the San Jose Health Center.

He remains in the intensive care unit, receiving sedation and assisted ventilation.

Due to the severity of his injuries, details of which have not yet been disclosed, the minor was airlifted from Limon on Saturday night. However, that trip was hampered by a lack of lighting at Limon International Airport.

Ambulances and public force patrols heading to the scene had to light up the runway so the private plane could take off.

Jimenez said that in addition to the child, the intensive care unit was full this Monday and there were other patients who needed blood or its derivatives, so he called on citizens over 18 years old and weighing more than 52 kilograms to donate blood to the hospital’s bank, which is open from 6:30 am to 11 am from Monday to Thursday.

On Saturday afternoon, a shooting took place in a house in Santa Marta de Matina, Limón, when armed men entered through the back door and opened fire indiscriminately, killing children. The minor’s mother (29 years old) Yocelyn Leticia Chacón Berrocal and a man named Geovanny died on the spot.

It was Chacon’s birthday and there was an event at home. A shell casing from an AK-47 rifle and a 9mm pistol were found at the scene. It was speculated that both adults were involved in the drug incident and that the woman was two months pregnant.

She is single and last registered for elections at the Vilma Curling Institutional Care Center in Desamparados, where she has been for several years, since the records of the judiciary contain a protection appeal she made in 2018, asking them not to put her in the same cell with another prisoner.
