A Bua chief has warned that iTaukei culture and traditions could be quickly lost.

Tui Bua Ratu Makutu Nagagavoka said iTaukei customs and traditions were in danger of disappearing if immediate action was not taken.

“This severance threatens not only our traditions but also the essence of our identity as Itaki people,” Ratu Makutu said.

He said the ongoing push for modernization has led to a decline in the practice of traditional rituals and maintenance of cultural values.

“The changes we are seeing are deeply disturbing,” Ratu Makutu said, adding that some customs and traditions no longer exist.

“You may have noticed this in your own villages.”

He stressed the need to protect important cultural and traditional assets such as fisheries and lands.

“These are not only vital for cultural practice and community cohesion, but are also economically important.”

He said everyone should contribute to preserving culture and traditions.
