A Milford man will ride a charity bike from Donegal Hospice to Bolton Hospice in England this Friday in memory of his late mother.
Paul McGinley, from Mount Moyle, is a keen Bolton Wanderers fan and hopes to raise as much money as possible for both organisations.
Two years ago he lost his beloved mother, Frances McGinley, to cancer and she spent two years in hospital before a brief stay at Donegal Hospice where she died.
Paul’s wife Shona told the Donegal Daily: “Frances was a kind, giving woman who always put others first. She really was a special woman.”

“Paul is a huge Bolton Wanderers fan. We are both season ticket holders and try to go to as many home games as possible,” she added.
“We have made many great friends in Bolton over the last few years. Former Bolton Wanderers player and club ambassador John McKinlay mentioned the great work the club does in supporting the Hospice so Paul decided to organise a charity bike ride to raise money for the Hospice who cares for his mother and for the town who show us such warmth and kindness.”
The McGinley family is so grateful for the care the hospice has given Frances and wanted to find a way to give back while also honoring her memory.
So Paul began looking for volunteers to join the ride and support staff to help.
He gathered 11 cyclists in total, 9 of whom would complete the entire ride and the other two would complete the Irish leg. Paul’s father Gerard was the first to sign up.
“Gerald celebrated his 72nd birthday last week and his fitness levels put many family members to shame,” Shawna continued.

Paul’s brothers Ciaran and Gerald are also accompanying him, as are his uncle Pat Hegarty, brother-in-law Mark Scott, nephew Dylan McGarrigle, cousins Eamon and Christopher McGinley and friends Ivan Scott and Lexie Diver. A further six people will follow him in a van, offering refreshments and encouragement along the way.
Paul established a GoFundMe pageprinted sponsorship cards and organised local events to raise funds for the two hospices.
Some of their Bolton friends have also been keen to help and will be raising funds.
They will leave Donegal Hospice at 7:30am on Friday morning and cycle to Belfast (197km) where we will take the ferry overnight. Once in Birkenhead they will embark on the next leg (84km) and arrive at Bolton Hospice around 11:30am on Saturday morning.
“We will then head to the Bolton Wanderers Stadium for a well deserved rest, but not until we have all seen Bolton beat Exeter. Paul’s efforts to get as many Donegal people as possible to become fans of Bolton Wanderers Football Club continue,” concluded Shauna.
