Bells, Cortez – The Cortes Campana community celebrated the inauguration of the rehabilitated Heriberto Castillo Basic Education Center (CEB) last Friday, August 16. The event marked an important milestone in the improvement of educational infrastructure in the region, being the inauguration of the 21st center of the alliance between the Ficohsa Foundation, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Secretary of Education (SEDUC).
The educational center was completely renovated and can accommodate 560 students, 23 teachers and 13 classrooms. Improvements included general painting inside and outside the classrooms, floor repairs, as well as painting and repairing balconies and installing protective nets. In addition, the false ceilings throughout the building were repaired.

The electrical system was relocated and improved, including its access and the installation of LED lighting in the classrooms. Other important works included: the removal and construction of new walkways in the first module, the repair of doors and the replacement of bathroom suites, improvements to the drainage system, the sealing of leaks and the replacement of bed linens.
Damaged metal structures were also repaired, stands were carved and painted, and the switchboards on the pitch were replaced. All this was done with the participation of the community, who, in addition to managing the disposal of debris generated by the works, were involved in the cleaning of the centre, the repair and painting of flower pots, fences and benches.

Karla Simón, Executive Director of Fundación Ficohsa, attended the inauguration of the center and said: “We are committed to the future of our young people, and the opening of this educational center is another step in creating a dignified and enabling space for their training. “This alliance with USAID allows us to strengthen our impact in the communities that need it most.”
Selene Sánchez, spokesperson for the Ficohsa Foundation, stressed: “Education is fundamental to development, and with every new center we open, we are investing in a better tomorrow for Honduras. We are proud to see the results of our work together with the community and our allies.

Representatives from local authorities, the Ficosa Foundation, USAID and the Minister of Education, as well as community members attended the opening ceremony to celebrate this important step forward in education in the region.
