A second trial into the Ndélé incident is underway and the Special Criminal Court (CPS) has announced a third case.
The Special Criminal Court (SCC) announced on Wednesday the upcoming start of the third trial. This is the case of the Special Prosecutor against the defendants Oumar Serge Abdoulaye Assan, Abdramane Seleman alias Ada, Abakar Balaman, Amat Younous alias Mahamat Framer, Hassan alias Assan Adam, Haroun Gueye and Zakaria Mahamat alias Zoulou, all accused of war crimes and human rights violations for crimes against humanity that they allegedly committed in March 2020 in Ndélé, Bamingui-Bangoran prefecture.
The first hearing, called a status conference (closed), is scheduled for Friday, June 21. “This will be the first meeting with the parties to the trial in order to organize the start of arguments for the trial, known as Ndélé 2,” the CPS press release mentioned. Gervais Opportun Bodagaye, head of the Information and Communications Department at the SCC, said that at the end of this status conference and all related proceedings, a date will be set for the actual start of the trial.
Abdoulaye Hussein is not on the list
Although Abdoulaye Hissène, the former military leader of the Front Popular pour la Renaissance de la Centrafrique, was arrested last September in connection with the Ndélé incident, his name does not appear on the list of accused published by the court. When asked, Gervais Opportun Bodagaye said that he (Abdoulaye Hissène) was involved in another incident, but did not reveal the details. However, in the current trial and debate, it has been made clear by the trial parties that Abdoulaye Hissène will be part of the Ndélé 2 case, without any readjustment by the court. In this trial involving four accused, related to the Ndélé 1 incident, Abdoulaye Hissène was summoned and questioned several times by these accused and witnesses, and even by the trial departments. The conflicting debates on the records of the accused in this trial ended this Thursday in Bangui.
The events in Ndélé were characterized by intercommunal clashes that took place between March and April 2020 between two factions of the Front populaire pour la renaissance de la Centrafrique (FPRC) group, the Goula and the Longa factions.
