The government responded quickly to a request by MP Joseph Bendoona to postpone the local elections scheduled for next October. The president of the Movement for the Renewal and Development of Democracy in the Central African Republic (MDREC) said the security, financial and social situation in the country did not allow these elections to take place as scheduled. According to the government, this request was not granted.
On June 19, the elected national deputies asked in an open letter to the President of the Republic, Faustin-Archange Touadéra, to postpone the local elections next October. In this note, Joseph Benduga lists a number of difficulties that, according to him, do not allow for the smooth conduct of these votes. According to the Government, this is an unfounded request.
‘We funded the referendum without support’
“The MDREC chairman believes there are good reasons for the postponement, including political, financial and organizational ones. He thinks the state is not able to finance elections? But we financed the constitutional referendum without external support. We will take responsibility as a responsible government.” said Maxime Balalou, communications minister and government spokesman.
According to a government spokesman, more than 70% of the planned budget has been allocated.

“We are receiving a certain amount of donations from friends at the bilateral level. Cameroon has announced 250 million CFA francs. MINUSCA has also made a significant contribution of more than 1.7 million US dollars. Canada has announced 75,000 US dollars and the European Union has provided 2 million US dollars. Maxime Balaru said.
The Central African Republic has not organized local elections in more than 35 years. The government says that meeting the deadline will make it possible to promote grassroots democracy. But for the opposition parties united in the BRDC, the process is not inclusive and lacks transparency. Therefore, they will not participate.
