After nearly a month of work, the first criminal session of 2024 at the Bangui Court of Appeal came to an end on Tuesday (20 August). Despite the logistical difficulties that arose during the session, the prosecution had the opportunity to make a positive assessment.
On this occasion, the Attorney General’s Office welcomed the results achieved and gave a positive assessment of the trial, which was held from July 22 to August 20, 2024. The first criminal trial of 2024 is scheduled to hear 69 cases. 31 people were sentenced to forced labor in 55 cases, of which 4 were sentenced to life imprisonment and 10 were sentenced to simple convictions. Three trials were held in absentia. Seven cases were acquitted and 10 were transferred to future criminal trials. Those convicted were found guilty of various crimes, including assassination, murder, fraud and witchcraft, and attacks on the internal security of the State.
But even before the end of this session, the judge issued a final verdict on a military police warrant officer. Robert Boylamba was found guilty of murder and sentenced to 15 years of hard labor. The Bangui Prosecutor’s Office ended the first meeting on a positive note, although it noted some difficulties related to transportation options, the provisional release of certain accused persons and respect for the duration of their detention.
The Central African Republic’s criminal procedure law provides for two criminal hearings per year. The date for the second session has not yet been announced.
