Bula Vinaka, welcome to another edition of SPTO’s monthly Sustainable Tourism Newsletter!
As we draw to a close in the first half of 2024, we sincerely thank you for your continued support and commitment to walking with us as we continue to support the sustainable development, management and promotion of Pacific destinations. June saw some notable achievements, including the launch of Fiji’s National Sustainable Tourism Framework! We are also pleased to share that the focus destination for this issue of Newsbeat is Fiji, where happiness comes naturally!
The June issue features updates from Fiji’s Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation (MTCA) on their role in supporting regional tourism development cooperation as hosts of the 7th South Pacific Tourism Exchange. Learn more about Fiji’s recently launched National Sustainable Tourism Framework, which outlines a 10-year strategic plan for sustainable tourism development in the country. Under the framework, MTCA has launched its Farm to Fork initiative, a major step in promoting a sustainable and healthy food supply chain. On the industry front, Fiji highlights the launch of Rosie Holidays’ first fleet of electric vehicles, a step towards its goal of 100% zero-emission vehicles.
The Pacific Tourism Organisation’s Department of Sustainable Tourism (DST) was honoured to attend the 13th Pacific Festival of Arts and Culture (FestPAC) held in Hawaii from 6 to 16 June. Pacific Tourism Organisation also hosted a panel session on Sustainable Cultural Tourism during the festival, bringing together cultural and tourism professionals to discuss the role of tourism in promoting and preserving Pacific culture and heritage. Three of Pacific Tourism Organisation’s youth representatives also participated in the two-week Pacific Youth Leaders (YPL) programme held in conjunction with the event.
There has also been progress in preparations for a situation analysis and stakeholder consultation to help develop a standards and certification scheme to phase out single-use plastics in the Pacific tourism industry. The consultation is scheduled for July 9-23. Nine national tourism organisations will be the first Pacific organisations to participate in climate action planning training hosted by the Tourism Foundation and Expedia Group, and will have the opportunity to attend the third Te Unga Mai professional development programme hosted by Regional Tourism New Zealand in Rotorua next month.
In terms of advocacy, the team interviewed young people who participated in the YPL program to get their views on tourism and the role of young people. These ideas were shared through a social media campaign, which you can find on our SPTO Facebook page.
The June Newsflash also provides updates from around the region and the world, including the Cook Islands’ Crown of Thorns initiative, Tonga’s tourism industry’s efforts to build capacity for climate finance, French Polynesia’s Sustainable Tourism Action Plan, Kiribati’s Mauri Way training, and the UN Tourism Department’s declaration of 2027 as the International Year of Sustainable and Resilient Tourism. This issue details some of the interesting events, job opportunities, training, tips and knowledge for sustainable tourism development in the region.
