Cazou is looking for alternatives for the last camp on the Costa Brava after participants fell ill again

Around 30 participants (including young people and supervisors) at the Kazou camp in Platja d’Aro on the Costa Brava have fallen ill. Kazou spokeswoman Lieselotte Vleminckx could not confirm exactly how many monitors have fallen ill. The young people, who travelled to Spain from the province of Antwerp, are said to have stomach and intestinal infections. They have all seen a doctor and received the necessary medication. Vleminckx reported that they should rest, drink enough water and take a sugar-salt solution. All the sick have been separated from the other participants.

A virus team has arrived to collect samples and investigate what the virus is. “The results won’t be known until Thursday,” Fleminx said. He said most of the patients are now improving. Five of them are said to be still seriously ill.

The third time

Earlier this week, several participants of a group in Limburg province had already fallen ill at the same location. One teenager had to stay in Montélimar, France, and was hospitalized with stomach and intestinal discomfort. During this time, she was allowed to return home.

Last month, nine young people from the Bruges area also fell ill on a bus returning from Spain. They were taken to Montpellier hospital with dizziness, vomiting and headaches. The two young people, aged 17 and 18, subsequently tested positive for Covid-19, but it is not clear whether this was also the cause.

Kazu assured that the camp meets the hygiene standards, which have been strengthened after the last infection. For example, hand washing before meals is more strictly monitored and the tables are disinfected more strictly. Kazu also stressed that the situation in Spain is being closely monitored. Earlier, the father of a sick supervisor said newspaper Hygiene conditions also left a lot to be desired: sick cooks, for example, continued to work without masks. Vleminckx could not confirm whether the cooks on site were actually sick: “We have not received any news about this from the local partner.” The same partner provided reinforcements, but this required coordination of personnel.

Finding Alternatives

Normally, another Kazoo training camp would have started in Praga daro later this week. Participants would have set out on Wednesday evening and arrived at the camp on Thursday. But since the results of the virus samples will not be known until Thursday, the plan is now being modified.

This means that Kazou will not return to the camp this summer. “We are actively looking for alternatives,” said Vleminckx. But it will be a race against time. “We will try to clarify the situation by Tuesday daytime at the latest.” If no alternative is found, the camp will be cancelled.

Despite the infection, the current camp will continue until Thursday. “We are following the doctors’ advice and allowing people to recover in the camp.”
