The Minister of Public Works, Housing and Water Resources, Carlos Mesquita, on Friday 16 August, in Maputo inspected the ongoing rehabilitation and expansion works of National Road 4 (N4), particularly at the Tsumene and Noare business complexes.
During his visit, as part of the road and bridge rehabilitation monitoring activities, Carlos Mesquita expressed satisfaction with the smoothness of road traffic following the completion of the rehabilitation and widening works in the central area of the road.
“Rehabilitation work on the central section of the road was completed in December last year and work is now focusing on two lines, each 9.5 kilometres long, which will help relieve pressure on the central road,” said the governor.
The work is expected to be completed by December next year. But even so, the traffic situation on the road has improved significantly, he stressed, stressing that the previous bottleneck was at the bridge because only two vehicles could pass.
Following the rehabilitation, an average of 25,000 vehicles now travel on the N4, of which approximately 2,400 are heavy vehicles. The N4 rehabilitation and widening project includes central lighting, traffic signs and space for future road widening if necessary, as well as a pedestrian crossing bridge in the Malhampsene area.
The Minister expressed concern over the lack of discipline among some motorists, which has led to frequent accidents, causing loss of life and property in the past four days. Space is reserved along the road for the protection of infrastructure and its expansion.
However, many owners of infrastructure built in these spaces have left on their own initiative, without any conflict with the authorities, Carlos Mesquita said, “We can see this in this section, which shows the coordination work between the ANE and the government.” He concluded, “We call on society to respect these areas, since some of them have been properly identified”.
