St. Maarten is in the process of electing a new government after the previous one resigned in May.

Marines from the Aruba Marine Corps Caribbean Squadron and soldiers from Curacao traveled to the island to provide assistance during the elections. Marines and Royal Military Police from the Sint Maarten Detachment also deployed for this purpose.

Supporting civil authorities is one of the Department of National Defence’s permanent missions in the Caribbean. It is also one of the three constitutional missions of the armed forces.
