July 23, 2021 : Celebrating a funeral in Cap-Haïtien Jovenel Moisewas murdered on Wednesday, July 7, 2021, at his residence at Pèlerin 5 (Pétionville). This decision was taken in accordance with the wishes of the family of the late President and the decree of March 11, 2020, which laid down, in articles 32 to 36, the rules relating to public ceremonies, precedence, civil and military honors. The funeral took place in the presence of the Head of State’s widow, Martina Moïse, as well as several foreign delegations and members of the Government.

July 23, 1987 : After a dispute between peasants, members of the cooperative and certain large landowners (Da Tang) in the commune of Jean Labelle, a massacre was launched by the allies of Da Tang. About 139 peasants were killed.

July 23, 1795 : Toussaint Louverture is promoted to général de brigade. The National Convention recognizes the services rendered by Toussaint by promoting him to this rank. The three mulattoes, Virat, Rigaud and Louis-Jacques Beauvais, also receive the same honor on the same day.
