Canada has welcomed the US decision to sanction former President Michel Joseph Martelly for drug trafficking crimes.
Canada’s foreign minister posted on her X account, Melanie Joly The notification stated that the Canadian government welcomes the United States’ decision to impose drug trafficking sanctions on former Haitian President Michel Joseph Martelly, a decision made pursuant to Executive Order (EO) No. 14059 of December 15, 2021, imposing sanctions on foreign nationals involved in the global illegal drug trade.
“In 2022, we took a leading role in sanctioning Haitian terrorist political elites, and we encourage the international community to do the same,” his publication reads.
Melanie Joly clarified that we must work together to fight corruption and hold accountable those who terrorize the country and the Haitian people. “We must put pressure on those responsible to stop the senseless violence,” she continued.
It is worth noting that after this sanction, US financial institutions will be prohibited from providing loans or credits to Martelly; any foreign exchange transactions under US jurisdiction and in which Martelly has an interest will be prohibited, and Americans will be prohibited from investing in or purchasing large amounts of Martelly’s equity or debt instruments.
