Automaker Ford is recalling thousands of pickup trucks in Canada and the United States because an “unintended downshift” to first gear could cause the vehicle to lose control.
The recall issued Tuesday targets certain 2014 F-150 vehicles.
A Ford spokesperson told Global News in an email on Wednesday that approximately 95,000 vehicles in Canada will be affected by the recall.
In addition, approximately 552,188 vehicles were recalled in the United States.
Ford said the number of vehicles affected is expected to be less than one percent of the recalled vehicles.
“A loss of signal between the transmission output shaft speed sensor and the powertrain control module could cause the transmission to unexpectedly downshift to first gear, regardless of vehicle speed,” the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said. Said in the recall notice.
“Unintentional downshifting to first gear could result in loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash.”
A Ford spokesperson told Global News that the malfunction indicator light (MIL) may illuminate before the customer downshifts to first gear.

“In some cases, the output shaft signal can be restored while driving and the vehicle will resume normal function; in other cases, the vehicle may need to be stopped and restarted to resume normal transmission operation,” the spokesperson said.
Letters notifying affected truck owners are expected to be mailed next week.
Dealers will update the powertrain control module software free of charge.
Ford said it expects to begin repairing the recalled trucks in the third quarter of this year.
Ford announced the recall after U.S. auto safety regulators in March began investigating complaints that more than 540,000 2014 Ford pickup trucks could suddenly downshift and increase the risk of a crash.
Transport Canada estimates that approximately 95,174 F-150 pickup trucks are affected across the country.
“Ford will notify owners by mail and advise them to take their trucks to a dealer to have the powertrain control module software updated,” the department said in a statement. The recall notice was updated on Wednesday.
