The United Kingdom, which supports the Children Act, which forces many large internet companies, except Facebook and TikTok, to modify their services to benefit children, is now requiring strict age verification standards, known as “children in the name of the name.” According to a report published by Bloomberg titled “On the Internet, No One Knows You Are a Child,” the bill will be submitted to Parliament for consideration in 2022. The measure would require companies to follow certain standards to confirm age.

Child Internet Safety Act

The report explains that in the United States; two senators have introduced a Child Online Safety Act that is modeled on the latest UK bill, but the US proposal lacks details on how the age verification standard will be implemented, only mentioning that US regulators need to explore possible implementation methods that are technically implementable.

Online Age Verification

Julie Dawson, policy director at Yoti, a company specialising in age verification, said the report noted that the German government had approved around 80 different methods of online age verification and that the country’s regulators were more advanced than in other countries. The London-based website and Germany’s child protection watchdog had threatened to ban one of the world’s largest porn sites because of its inadequate age verification requirements.
