Life has its ups and downs. The economy is no exception.
Good times can lift millions out of poverty, create new jobs, and spur innovation by boosting savings and investment. Bad times can be devastating. People lose their jobs, families are forced to make sacrifices, and businesses disappear in the blink of an eye. Economists call this kind of recession an “ebb and flow.” Business cycle.
It is such an important and far-reaching force that understanding and controlling the business cycle is one of the great dreams of the field of economics.
This week we heard two stories about going through business cycles, one about individual businesses and the other about the technology that economists and governments have created to help alleviate the pain and impact of business cycles.
We cover:
- Business Cycle
- Contraction and recession
- How it exacerbates inequality
- Chapter 11 Bankruptcy
- Countercyclical government policies
