Can Aunt Jenny lead the NDP to electoral victory?

Opinion – The National Democratic Party (NDP) recently got a new chairperson, Jennifer Geerlings-Simons, known as Aunt Jenny, who is currently working on a national schedule.

While her dedication is admirable, it also raises important questions about her ability to lead the party to electoral victory. Expectations are high and challenges are many.

Integrity within the Party

One of Gillings-Simmons’ biggest challenges will be restoring integrity within the NDP, where several members have made mistakes in the past.

It is vital that these people keep order and step back when necessary. This provides an opportunity for honest, knowledgeable Surinamese youth and elders to contribute to the party and the country.

Examples of good governance

As Gillings-Simmons herself said: “To change the world, start with yourself.” This motto should be the guiding principle of the New Democratic Party.

The party must set the right example and establish high standards, not only for itself but for Surinamese politics as a whole.

This means that the NPP must develop profile organizations for candidates for the National Assembly (DNA), District Councillors (DR) and Regional Councillors (RR), as well as for directors, deputy directors and heads of departments within the government and semi-government.

The NDP should also work to establish clear profiles for all relevant positions. This ensures that the relevant experts appointed can actually contribute to good governance.

Furthermore, transparency is essential. All assets of party members must be notarized to prevent corruption and conflicts of interest.

Good governance as a standard

“The New Democracy Party stands for good governance and transparency. However, this must not be just words. It must become a tangible reality within the party. Only by being open and honest can the New Democracy Party regain the trust of the Surinamese people and take the lead in politics,” said Gillings-Simons.

The path forward for the NDP is clear, but fraught with challenges. The new president has the responsibility to promote a culture of clean governance within the party.

This means that it must not only address current challenges but also develop a vision for a transparent and accountable future. Only in this way can the New Democracy party reform itself and set a high standard for the rest of Suriname’s political landscape.
