On Thursday, August 22, 2023, the regional committee responsible for preventing irrigation with untreated wastewater carried out a control campaign in Utik Jedidai.

In addition to disrupting contaminated agricultural production, the operation also seized motors, pumps and their accessories and machines used for this purpose.

The five-year drought has had a severe impact on agriculture. As a result, given water restrictions and rationing, some farmers have resorted to illegal methods, especially the use of untreated wastewater, which poses a risk to citizens’ health.

The president of the committee, Samir Abdellaoui, governor of Bizerte, said in a telephone interview with Linda Rahali on the Mosaïque FM Ahla Sbeh program, Friday, August 23, 2024, that the brigade drafted ten minutes of judicial officers of the National Guard the day before.

It also insisted that an individual was arrested at the end of March last year after consultation with prosecutors.

According to a press release issued on Thursday, August 22, 2024, the governor estimates that the attack on public health is a red line and will apply the law to combat these illegal and unethical practices by highlighting the dangers to the environment of irrigating land and even farmers with this water.

and confirmed that after the completion of legal and administrative procedures, the necessary dissuasive decisions will be taken against the perpetrators, in addition to an immediate decision to plow and destroy all areas irrigated with untreated water.

For him, it is necessary to put an end to these practices, which he calls criminal, and adopt normal irrigation methods and communicate with technical and agricultural services to support farmers in taking additional measures so that their crops and plantations can be irrigated legally.
