The Methodist Church of Fiji has called for curbs on excessive use of kava and restrictions on smoking by priests, a call that has been supported by dignitaries such as Turaga na Tui Suva Ratu Sanaila Madanavosa.
Ratu Sanaila, who is also Suvavu district representative, said the change will play an important role in determining the future of the country.
“I support the President’s call because if we want Fiji to prosper, it must start with us men,” he said.
“Men! You should spend less time drinking Yakuna and more time taking care of your family, because you are the head of the family.”
“What we do reflects on our children because they are excellent imitators.
“Personally, I only eat two or three bowls a day and that’s it. I have to think about the next day because the next day is another day where I need to be productive.
“Some people tend to do the opposite, drinking from dusk to dawn, then sleeping all day, and repeating the cycle.
“I need to emphasise this because if we want Fiji and its people to prosper, we must limit excessive intake of kava.”
Ministers and dignitaries from all sectors expressed support for President Semisi Tulagawo’s call.
Rev. Wiliam Fatiaki, branch director of the Methodist Church in Rotuma, said it was important for pastors to uphold their roles and responsibilities and standards of service.
“MCIF has always believed that free will is given to men to decide, that is why we do not enforce regulations and laws. It all depends on our judgement, good judgement, but it must start with us as leaders and setting an example for the members.
“Part of the discussion has been passed which will pave the way for the young pastors to abide by what was discussed to restore the lost image of Christ within the Methodist Church in Fiji.”
