The All India Agricultural Workers Union (AIAWU) staged a protest outside the social welfare office, demanding an inquiry into alleged irregularities and non-payment of daily wages in hostels run by the social welfare department.
In a memorandum to the joint director of the social welfare department, Bheemshetty Yempalli, president of the district trade union, urged him to take action against Girish Ranjolkar, assistant director of the social welfare department, and the personnel agency employing the workers.
The protesters claimed that the staffing agency had been paying Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,500 less than the stipulated salary over the past three years. In addition, the agency was not paying provident fund and employee state insurance on behalf of the workers.
Officials have stayed out despite a series of protests by shelter workers over the past two years. In February, about 200 workers submitted bank statements to confirm they were paid less than their fixed salaries. They claim officials are trying to cover up corruption rather than taking action against personnel agencies and officials involved in the practice.
The protesters alleged that Assistant Commissioner Girish Ranjolkar and agency staff verbally threatened the workers that they would be fired if they participated in the protest.
The unions demanded that the SWD authorities direct the agency to repay the debts of the workers and also asked the agency to issue appointment letters to all the workers.
